Demetrius D. Smith named associate vice president for Student Affairs
Athens, Ga. – Demetrius D. Smith, currently special assistant to the vice chancellor for equity, diversity, inclusion and student affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, has been named associate vice president for student affairs at the University of Georgia.
Smith will provide strategic leadership to support UGA and the Division of Student Affairs in effectively addressing the needs of UGA’s increasingly diverse student population, championing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts across the student experience. As associate vice president, he will directly supervise three departments within Student Affairs: International Student Life, the Pride Center, and Multicultural Services and Programs. Smith will report directly to Vice President for Student Affairs Victor K. Wilson and serve as a member of the senior administrative and leadership teams for the Division of Student Affairs.
“Demetrius brings the perfect set of skills and experience to advance diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging in our learning environment,” said Wilson. “Whether directly engaging students or leading key initiatives and collaborations, including our diversity and inclusive excellence planning, his enthusiasm and leadership will be a great addition to our efforts to serve students.”
Smith’s appointment is effective February 1.
Smith said he looks forward to inspiring students and staff with a strong vision for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging at UGA, elevating diversity and inclusion efforts in the Division of Student Affairs to a national model of excellence.
“The University of Georgia is passionate about ensuring students experience a sense of belonging,” said Smith. “Being a first-generation college student, I am personally invested in advocating for students and doing everything I can to build connect, engage, and collaborate with them on ways to enhance their college experiences and environment.”
Smith previously served as director of African American Initiative Program and residence life coordinator at Middle Georgia State University. He then moved to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where he served as program director for equity, diversity, and inclusion, director for Blugold Beginnings, and most recently as special assistant to the vice chancellor.
Smith is an alumnus of the University of Georgia, where he earned his Doctor of Education in student affairs leadership. He also holds a Master of Education in higher education administration and a Bachelor of Science in sport management, both from Georgia Southern University.
