Start with Students
In recent weeks I have had the fortunate opportunity to meet with a number of fellow senior student affairs leaders from across the southeast and around the nation through professional development groups. The more we have shared together as leaders, the more familiar these conversations have become.
Through these conversations, I’ve learned that so much of our work in student affairs at UGA is common to campuses everywhere: helping to prepare and challenge students to think and grow, learn to lead, engage, and have an impact. Our challenges may not be unique, but our response to them in the way we support our students is what makes us special. I’ve also discovered that our worries may underestimate the maturity and resilience of our students – many are stronger and doing better than we may presume.
UGA students will go on to be leaders not only on campus, but in communities across the state and far beyond. When we do what’s best for students—not only for here and today, but for the rest of their lives—that’s what’s really noteworthy.
