The Holiday Things We Do

Around this time of year, many of us celebrate traditions and holidays with special significance in our lives. These are often moments to come together and share in common purpose with neighbors, family, and friends. In these traditions, we offer kindness and understanding, comfort those in need. We listen, nurture, give, and give thanks.

The question to me is why it takes a holiday to inspire goodwill. Growing up, my mother always reminded me, “It’s not the holiday things you do at holiday time, it’s the holiday things you do all year through.” I still take that to heart. Our students, families, communities, and world need our compassion and commitment to each other every single day. I challenge us all, as we move through the winter break into a new year, to make the spirit of holidays enduring: Engage genuinely and selflessly, seek understanding, continue to give and give thanks. To me, those holiday things are what we need for the entire year! Enjoy the season.
